Using Jumper Cables to Start Your Car

Connecting jumper cables to start your car is a very easy process. Prior to a jump start, make sure that the battery terminals are free of acid corrosion.

Next, bring the vehicle being used for the jump start close to the side of the battery in your car and proceed to connect the jumper cables. It’s crucial that you use the same color-coded cable on each end. Use the red cable for the positive battery post and the black cable for the negative battery post.

Be sure not to touch the negative and positive cables together once they’re connected to the running vehicle to avoid short-circuiting any electrical components. Use the jumper cables to clamp onto the battery posts securely. You may see an electrical spark, which is perfectly normal. After the jumper cables are secure, attempt to start your car.
